Amidst the pleasant sights of the Detroit River and a whole lot of arrogant fellow diners, you can mange to enjoy a good meal yourself. The food which is mainly modern American is good and so are most of the cocktails. To top it all up, the waiters are nice and provide excellent service. The Rattlesnake is one of the oldest and finest restaurants in Detroit.
Bastone in the Royal Oak area of Detroit is the place to be if you want some quality Belgian food. If the European beer hall like atmosphere of the restaurant does not excite you, the food definitely will. Start with mussels stewed in tomato, garlic, herbs, white wine and blue cheese. Move on to the Seafood Waterzooi - a seafood stew which is a specialty of Bastone. Top it off with some nice Belgian beer and delicious fresh pie. And do not miss out on the hand cut pomme frites which are basically Belgian fries and are served with a wide variety of specialty mayonnaises. If you eat here once you will definitely make another visit.
If dessert is the most important part of the meal for you then Forte, a Birmingham Restaurant is where you need to dine. The chocolate banana tart with espresso ganache, caramel and praline sauce will have you asking for more. But beware of the calories that you will be putting on. The food is not bad; especially the grilled quail, wild mushroom roulade and veal chop with polenta. The wide range of ingenious pizzas is worth a try as well. The restaurant is usually full and so is the bar which has a very lively feel to it.
The Original Pancake House undoubtedly provides the best breakfast in Detroit. But be prepared to wait in a queue which can be unbearably long on weekends. The menu with only eggs, crepes, waffles and pancakes might make you think twice about standing in that queue but the quality of the food will make it a worthwhile wait. Try one of the wide varieties of pancakes - the Big German which is baked and served with fresh lemon and powdered sugar or the Garden Dutch Baby which is filled with fresh vegetables and topped with Gouda cheese. Your breakfast will definitely be memorable at The Original Pancake House.
As the name suggests Lily's Seafood serves excellent seafood. The decor of the restaurant is different in a nice way. As you eat the fish on your plate you can see its cousins swim around in the tanks that line the restaurants walls. There is more fish in the form of sculptures, paintings and photographs - slightly overdone but fun in its own way. The restaurants specialty is its seafood boil with the large piles of shrimp, mussels, scallops, potatoes, tomatoes and sausage. For lunch you can choose from the numerous fish sandwiches but perhaps the best of the lot is the Rueben which has pastrami and smoked fish. And in case you do not like seafood then the restaurant also has a number of delicious pork and chicken dishes. And in case you like to try out new things then the brunch on Saturday and Sunday will allow you to mix some eggs and toast with the seafood.
Lafayette Coney Island provides quality food at very cheap prices. Of all the hot dog joints in the city, this is the best. The place is difficult to find but once you have tasted the food there you might not find the place but your stomach and definitely your pocket will. The coney dogs with plenty of chili and pork are delectable and so are the chili cheese fries with their large amounts of real shredded cheese. The service in the joint is lightning fast so you can grab a really quick bite. And where else can you get a good hot dog, fries and a coke for less than five dollars.
