Amarillo Texas
Amarillo is situated in Potter Country and extends up to Randall country of Texas. The Potter country received its name in the memory of Robert Potter, a Republic of Texas politician and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence.The Geographical coordinates of city are 3511′57″N, 10150′43″W. It covers an area of 233.9 square Kilometer with only 1.2 square Kilometer water. The city is situated 3605 feet above the ground. Debra Mc Cartt is the present mayor of city. The city has a small town atmosphere with people friendly and caring. It also offers benefits of big city. The city has shown tremendous growth in recent past. The population of city is 236,113 with density of 782.5/km.
City is known for its discipline population, Colorful sunset, quality education system, exquisite food and wide open spaces. Adjacent counties of Potter country are Moore County (north) ,Carson County (east) ,Randall County (south) and Oldham County (west).
History of Amarillo:
In 1887 a group of Colorado city merchants started their establishment in Potter country. In April 1887 J. T. Berry platted the new town in Potter city. Berry and the Colorado City merchants decided to make this the town a trade center. In October 1887 railways was built and freight was made available. A post office was established in 1887 with Robert M. Moore as postmaster. By 1888 the Berry received the patent of town site. By 1890 Amarillo became world's busiest cattle-shipping points. The city library was opened in 1908 and first opera center stated in 1909. Amarillo's first Catholic school, opened in 1914.
Population and Economy:
The population of the town grew from 482in 1890 to 1442 in 1900 which further grew to 9957 by 1910.Industrial revolution and oil and zinc mining further helped the population growth. It reached 51,686 in 1940.Between 1950 and 1960 the population was 137,969. The base of Amarillo Air Force was closed in 1968, thus reducing the population to 127,010. In 1990 the population of Amarillo was 157,615. In 2000 the population grew to 173,627.Present population of Amarillo is 236,113.
The Principal source of income of Amarillos people are Gas, petroleum, agriculture, and cattle.The local businesses included petrochemicals, grain storage, processing, meat packing, clothing, feed, leather goods, and cement manufacture. The meat packing industry of Amarillo is the largest meat packaging industry of US. It feeds almost one quarter of US. The major source of personal income comes from service industry. The major companies offering employment in Amarillo are Tyson food followed by Amarillo Independent School District , BWXT Pantex, Bell Helicopter, Textron Baptist St. Anthonys Health Care System, ASARCO, City of Amarillo Northwest Texas Healthcare System, Amarillo College, and United Supermarkets.Agriculture includes corn, wheat and cotton , sorghum, silage, hay and soybeans. The education average of the city is less as compared to countries average. Only 79.3 % people of Amarillo complete their high school as compared to the average of 80.4 % people of the Country. The schools are handled by Amarillo Independent School District and Canyon Independent School District. Almost 37,000 students are studying in these schools. There are 5 high schools, 11 middle schools and 40 elementary schools in city. Amarillo College is a two-year college. The major universities of town are Wayland Baptist University, Texas Tech University at Amarillo and West Texas A&M University.
Transportation:

Amarillo City Transit services eight routes throughout the city. It was established in 1966. It is available Monday to Saturday from 6:30am until 6:30pm. Children under the age of six are free. Aapproximately 350,000 passengers travel by City transit per year.Rental of Vehicle is also available for local people and tourists. These car rentals provide quality and service for a range of cars. City does not have any passenger rail services. Many pavements are still made of bricks. City also have motor coaches these Greyhound buses connect Amarillo to Canada and Mexico.
