Rehoboth is a beach city located in the Sussex County of Delaware. It is a major tourist beach area. The city is known as the nations summer capital. It is located on the Atlantic coast, just two hours away from Washington. This beach city is a beautiful place to visit for living and working. As per, the information provided by the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society, in 1872, Reverend Robert W. Todd of St. Paul\'s M.E. Church in Wilmington visited a Camp meeting area on the Jersey Shore. He put up an idea of starting a camp area on the Delaware coast. In 1873, The Rehoboth Camp Meeting Association was formed and 414 acres of land was purchased from local farmers. The grounds were laid out in a fan-shaped design, with wide streets, parks and specific building lots. That design remains largely intact till date. The Camp Meeting Association was split up in 1881. In the year 1891, the place was incorporated by the Delaware General Assembly as Henlopen. Shortly after this, it was renamed to Rehoboth Beach.
Rehoboth is a Biblical term which means place or space for all. It is also named after Rehovot, a city in Israel. In Modern Hebrew, the name means streets. The name is prominently correct, due to Rehoboth Beach\'s ability to blend its distinct communities. The Boardwalk, which is a mile long territory, was originally built in 1873 on high ground between the beach and Surf Avenue; it ran the full length of the ocean front. The boardwalk of the beach was named as the cleanest board walk of America by the readers digest magazine in 2006.
Like most tourist beach areas, the place is packed with businesses catering to visitors. Wall to wall hotels are lined up all over the boardwalk of Rehoboth. Malls have been springing up everywhere. Still, the area isnt a complete place for living, due to the seasonal nature of the tourism business. The tourists flock to the area in summer, but for rest of the year it is fairly quiet. Rehoboth Beach, jointly with the towns of Lewes, Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach, South Bethany and Fenwick Island comprises of the Delaware\'s beach resorts. It is also Sussex County\'s most thickly populated and fastest-growing area. It is a regular summer vacation destination for Washington D.C. residents, as well as for visitors from Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.
Tourists are attracted to this city for various reasons, including the town\'s charm, artistic appeal, and nightlife. The city is still famous for its beaches, sporting activities, wooden boardwalk, amusements and miscellaneous shops. Rehoboth Beach serves as an option to nearby and much more developed Ocean City, Maryland. This town is also famous as it is the place of the first beauty pageant held in America, and one of the judges of this pageant was Thomas Edison. Actress Lynda Carter and the gun-control advocates James Brady and Sarah Brady have their summer homes in the Rehoboth Beach area.
