Odessa is a small town that is located in New Castle Country, Delawar e in United States. In the year 2000, according to the census the population in Odessa was around 286. The city was originally known as Cantwells bridge in the 18th century but the name was changed in the 19th century. This was because the Russian port city had the same name and so the city was named as Odessa, Delaware. Today a major part of the town is a national historic district.

Brief history of Odessa, Delaware

The first people to settle in the town were the Dutch in the 17th century. Today\'s Odessa, Delaware was initially known as Appoquinimink and was named after the creek it lies on. The Dutch were gradually washed off by the British and in the year 1664 the ancient Appoquinimink area was captured and was taken over by Captain Edmund Cantwell. In the year 1731 his innovative son Richard Cantwell took the authority over the village and built a large bridge over the creek. The little village of Appoquinimink was gradually became known as the Cantwells Bridge.

Tannery was the first industry that was built in the town in 1767 by William Corbit. Then in the year 1817 a blacksmith shop was opened with the purpose to serve just about the 30 houses in the town and along with this various manufacturing, cannery and agricultural industries followed. By the year 1825 the little town had grown to a mighty river port as it shipped farm produce and grains. In 1855 the Cantwells Bridge collapsed that supported the grain trade and the town declined gradually. The name was then changed to Odessa as the Russian grain port started to trade along the river. Today the little Odessa, Delaware is lined with fondly restored with the early 18th and 19th century houses.

The average family size that was calculated is 2.80 and the average household size was 2.40.
