Bellingham city is the administrative center of Whatcom county of Washington state in the United States. For the past century, Bellingham waterfront largely served as an industrial center and was recently purchased by the Port of Bellingham, which is planning to develop a marina in the waste water lagoon spanning 37 acres.
For the development of Bellingham, the Port and the City entered into a contract with respect to the area around the water front. They have signed an undertaking from the Port of Bellingham that they would take liability for any future contamination along the waterfront. However, the port of Bellingham had deviated from the responsibility of clearing the waterfront of mercury contamination. This and many other reasons, forced the citizen groups to openly lodge their protests against the port of Bellingham. This forced the port of Bellingham and city of Bellingham to enter into a partnership to redevelop the property. This project is named as New Whatcom. The waterfront futures group and the waterfront advisories group have forwarded the general plan for the development of city s waterfront. The plan contains details for a new neighborhood complete with homes, shopping centers along with park and promenades apart from a healthy shoreline for the residents Bellingham.
