Chicago Events

It's Mardi Gras time at the Navy Pier Grand Ballroom, 600 East Grand Avenue, with a FREE Chicago-style "CAR"-NI-VAL celebration featuring music and fun on Friday, February 9, featuring live performances from Dr. John and Donald Harrison. "CAR" - NI-VAL begins at 7pm and the first 500 people in the door will receive a complimentary ticket to the Chicago Auto Show at McCormick Place. All remaining concert-goers will receive a $5-off coupon for an Auto Show ticket.

Headliner, legendary New Orleans musician Dr. John, is known for his "fonk" music, a compilation of pop/blues/gospel/jazz/R & B/funk. His energetic sound is sure to have everyone's beads jumping by the end of the night. Opening for Dr. John is saxophonist Donald Harrison, one of the most respected jazz improvisers. From a line of New Orleans Mardi Gras chiefs, he will conjure up the spirit of Professor Longhair by featuring a rhythm section from the Tipitina's Foundation to help create his personal blend of New Orleans funk. The concert is free admission, but advanced tickets are required (there will be no tickets available at the door). Tickets are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis and can be obtained:

CADILLAC ASSEMBLY LINE: A TRIBUTE TO ALBERT KING ON SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 17

Get your groove moving at the "Cadillac Assembly Line: A Tribute to Albert King." Performers, including headline act Sir Mack Rice, pay tribute to King, a left-handed "upside-down/backwards" guitarist who influenced many prominent artists.

The concert starts at 7pm at the Cadillac Palace Theatre, 151 W. Randolph, and also includes performances from Chicagoans Fernando Jones and Big Time Sarah, The Platinum Band, Blues guitarist Melvin Taylor, and fellow guitar genius, Lurrie Bell. The tribute would not be complete without Carl Weathersby, King's former prot?g? and rhythm guitarist.

The self proclaimed Old Gangster of Hip Hop Blues, Sir Mack Rice then takes the stage. This fabled singer/songwriter is known for "Mustang Sally" and the title song for this event, "Cadillac Assembly Line." The night concludes with a jam session featuring all of the evening's performers to round up the event and make sure the last words of your night are "All you want to do is ride around Sally, ride, Sally, ride."

Tickets are $10 in advance and can be obtained through Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.com or 312-902-1400) or any Broadway in Chicago box office location.

"CAR"-NI-VAL and "Cadillac Assembly Line: A Tribute to Albert King" are part of Chicago Top 10 Winter Delights, the City of Chicago's winter initiative, January 2-February 28 sponsored in part by the Mayor's Office of Special Events, City of Chicago, Department of Cultural Affairs, Broadway in Chicago, Time Out Chicago, 93XRT, Navy Pier and WSSD Radio.
