Medical and dental insurance
Although the act of visiting the dentist does not contain the same terror it used to thanks to dental technology developing but dental benefits or the lack thereof can still strike many of us pale beyond comparison. However, there is not much cause for worry now; dental benefits can be affordable, even though they are not provided as benefits through your job. It is a good idea to buy a good dental plan that will cover all your needs if you have a history of rough dental problems or if you are likely to receive a lot of dental care in the future. Children may be provided with dental benefits if they covered by the federal or State Children's Health Insurance Plan, however this does not ensure them dental benefits. The decision to cover the children's dental costs is decided on a state to state basis.
Medical insurance which is typically termed as health insurance is a type of insurance in which the medical cost of the person who has taken the insurance is covered by the insurer. The point which one should always keep in mind is that you will be covered only for medical ailments mentioned the terms and conditions of the insurance. The insuring company is not responsible for any ailment which is not mentioned in the document. The insurer can both be a private player or a government agency.
Medical insurance can be either on individual basis or on a group basis. Group medical insurance generally means insuring your group like all the employees of your company. Usually plans are laid out in such a manner by the insurance companies that you can insure the entire group and the premium occurred to you comes out much cheaper had you insured all members of the group separately. Also when a company is paying a part of the premium, it makes sense to go for group insurance.
While approaching an insurance company for medical insurance the premium is decided according to your current health conditions. If you are condition is very poor health wise chances are that you will have to pay a very high premium or in the worst case the company may reject your application all together. This procedure is followed by the insurers to make sure they are always rolling in profits. Generally you are asked you fill out a questionnaire and in certain cases even subjected to some tests before your premium is set.
Companies that have more than 500 employees generally provide dental care benefits within their plans for their employees. According to the National Association of Dental Plans, almost 89 percent of large employers offer some kind of dental benefits to their employees. The NADP claims that 40 percent of the U.S. workforce still lack benefits.
Some policyholders are often confused by the coverage they are afforded through dental insurance plans and as compared to them, dental "discount" plans. The entire cost is covered after deducting the basic deductions. Dental discount plans are quite different. They work as diner club memberships. In accordance with your fee, you are given certain discounts on services like braces, fillings, exams, and routine cleanings. Members of dental discount plans generally receive around to 30 percent off on the dental fee.
When your dental charges are covered by a dental discount plan, there are certain things that one must keep in mind, such as going to a dentist who has agreed to participate in the discount plan and offer dental services at a discounted price. Other features of plans like this include an initial enrollment fee, a monthly fee to the dental discount company and discounts on cosmetic procedures that are usually excluded from most dental insurance plans. Although these plans sound very attractive and a lot more value-for-money than a dental insurance, there are some things that you should remember while choosing a dental discount plan.
Make sure that the company offering dental insurance is licensed to operate in the state. You can also look at the database of BBB (Better business Bureau). This will ensure that the company has at least some credibility. Make sure you have the Company's correct address; make sure it is not a mere post box number. Legitimate and legal plans will give you all information about themselves and their activities, for example, they will send you all marketing materials before taking your membership. Legitimate companies have a website where their representatives can be contacted. They will welcome queries unlike fraudulent outfits posing as discount companies.
Do not conduct any financial transactions with companies that are unwilling to give you a list of practicing dentists who are providers of discount services. It is a good idea to double-check with the dentists themselves, just to be sure. Do not be in a hurry to join, think it over and if the company is employing high pressure techniques to get you to join then it is probably a bogus company. Another recent trend in dental care is the direct reimbursement plan. This is a plan where the employer pays all dues to the dentist with its own funds, instead of paying premiums to an insurance company or discount plan company. The concept is that you get your dental services done, pay for them and then show the receipt to your employer who will reimburse the amount for you, entirely or partly according to the benefits you have.
One must keep a track of the updates from the company's side. By this I mean that you must keep yourself aware of the company's policies, schemes, bonuses, etc regularly. Being health insured is helpful, but keeping its regular track and maintaining the records of the same can prove to be a real blessing in any incident of need.
