BerliNgtoN isamid-size town having a total area of 30.8 sq. km in Middlesex County in Massachusetts. It is bordered by Bedford on the west, Billerica on the northwest, Wilmington on the northeast, Woburn on the southeast and by Lexington and Woburn on the south. It is around 12 miles south of Lowell, 13 miles northwest of Boston, 36 miles southeast of Fitchburg and around 224 miles from New York City. The highest point of Burlington is Greenleaf Meadow, 290 above sea level, and the lowest point is the Great Meadow, 150 above sea level. The largest body of water is the 500 mn gallon Millpond Reservoir in the eastern part of the town.The first settlement of Burlington happened in 1641, but it was only in 1799 that Burlington ma was officially incorporated. The town is situated on the watersheds of Ipswich, Mystic and Shawsheen Rivers. Burlington was initially an agricultural town, mostly selling hops and rye to Boston, adding to the agricultural income through small shoe making shops. Burlington ma was not a part of the early railroad expansion and hence, continued to remain an agri-economy producing milk, fruits, vegetables and curing hams for the Boston market. Development of Route 128 boosted an enormous expansion in Burlington, making it the fastest growing town in the state between 1955 and 1965. During one five year term, the population of Burlington tripled due to growth in residential and commercial retail development.
Over the last 15 years, Burlington has become a home to many hi-tech companies and industries and is loaded with opportunity for the professional business person. It has experienced a boom in commercial growth with continuous development of the Burlington Mall and construction work at Wayside Commons. Many new buildings have come up at the town's main road Cambridge St. paving way for more offices and residential growth. Core industrial sectors operating in Burlington are electronic components, precision instruments and computer and communications software.
Burlington is governed by a 108 member representative Town Meeting and a five member executive Board of Selectmen. As per the census of 2000, Burlington ma had a total population of 22,876 people, 8,289 households and 6,374 families staying in the town. The population density of the town was 747.9 per sq. km. Burlington had 8,445 housing units having an average density of 276.1 per sq. km. The population of the town had increased by 1.8% by 2005 and the estimated figures at the end of July, 2005 were 23,299. The population of the town can be divided racially as 85.8% White Non-Hispanic, 2.3% Chinese, 1.3% Hispanic, 1.4% Black, 6.9% Asian Indian while 0.9% were two or more races and 0.6% were other Asians. The ancestral distribution was Irish 28.9%, Italian 23.5%, English 10.4%, German 4.4%, French Canadian 4.0% and United States 3.9% Out of 8,289 households, 32.6% had children below 18 years of age living with them, 65.2% were married couples living together, 9.1% were female occupants having no husbands at present and 23.1% were non-families. 19.1% of all households comprised of individuals, while 7.7% occupants were aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size was 3.18. 43% of Burlington residents aged 25 and older have a bachelors or a more advanced college degree.
The population spread was, 23.6% under age 18, 6.3% ranging from 18 to 24, 31.1% were from 25 to 44, 25.2% were from 45 to 64 and the remaining 13.9% of the population was 65 years or older. The calculated median age was 38 years. Male to female ratio was 97.0 males for every 100 females. For every 100 females 18 or above, there were 93.7 males.
The per capita income of the town was $30,732 while the median income for households was $75,240 and for a family was $82,072. Males had a median income of $55,635 and females carried a median income of $36,486. About 1.3% of the families and 1.9% of the population were below the poverty line. The median resident age was estimated at 38.3 years and the median house value was $244,800. Median rent in Burlington at the time of the census was $977.
Burlington enjoyed a higher median household income, a much higher median house value, higher foreign-born population percentage and a higher percentage of population had completed their bachelors as compared to the state average of Massachusetts. The unemployed percentage, Black and Hispanic race population percentages as well as the renting percentage was much below the state average.

The only surviving 19th century connected-farm complex is Marion Tavern at Grand View Farm and is considered to be one of Burlington's principal architectural landmarks. Constructed around 1840, Grand View Farm comprises of 5 main structures, all linked through connected houses and barns, contributing much to the character of Burlingtons town center. Mrs. Rupings, the last owner to the property, after the death of her husband transferred the property to the family owned construction business. In 1999, Ruping Builders initiated the process of developing the site for an apartment complex. However, several town citizens objected to the move and initiated Save the Farm movement. After a lengthy and complicated negotiation process, Ruping Builders and Guiterrez Company settled a three way land swap with the town authorities. In 2002, the town acquired the 6 acres of Grand View property and its associated buildings to be preserved for the future generation.
Burlington had 5 fatal motor vehicle accidents between 2001 and 2003, as per National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This is a rate of 2.2 fatal crashes per 10,000 population which is much lower than the national norm. However, the crime rate was 1.4 per 1000 as recorded by FBI in 2003. The number of violent crimes recorded in Burlington was 32 while no murders or homicides were reported.
