All about Boston terrier:

Originated in the United States of America, the Boston terrier is a breed of dog that is compactly built and well proportioned. Around the year 1870, Robert C Hooper of Boston purchased a dog known as Hooper's Judge, a cross between an English bulldog and an English White terrier. This dog was bred with a smaller female and one of those male pups was bred to yet a smaller female. The breed was then known as Bull Terriers.Their offspring interbred with one or more French Bulldogs thus emerged the breed of Boston terrier. It was first shown in Boston in 1870. Later it went on to become quite popular in Boston, its birthplace. Few years later in 1893, the American Kennel Club (AKC) admitted this breed and gave the club membership status. So it became the first American breed to be recognized.

It's pretty easy to train them as they are quite intelligent. However some Boston Terriers are difficult to housebreak*, although most are housebroken by the age of 8 months.

Boston Terrier's characteristics:

Weighing 10 to 25 lb, these dogs have short tails, erect ears and a short muzzle.

They are Seal coloured but appear black with red highlights when viewed in the sun or bright light. Boston Terriers often do not bark.

They can live 15 years or more, but the average is 13 years. Due to their short muzzle, they cannot tolerate excessive heat and humidity.

Most of the Boston Terriers snort, grunt and wheeze. This doggie is prone to snoring loudly. While some people love it, few find it annoying.Their loose jowls tend to dribble water while they eat and drink.

Caring for Boston Terrier:

These compassionate canines are pretty much maintenance free. This breed is quite happy to be with the family, indoors. But that doesn't mean no outing. Regular daily exercise is a must to keep him fit and in shape. They enjoy walks, family play sessions and free play in a safely fenced area.

Regular brushing with a firm bristle brush will minimize loose hair. This breed sheds seasonally. A mild shampoo should be used while bathing Boston Terriers. Bath him only when necessary.

Since they drool excessively, it is important to frequently wipe the face. Clean the dog's face daily with a wet cloth. Also make sure you clean around the eyes. Their eyes and ears need to be checked and cleaned on a regular basis.

These dogs are prone to occasional health problems such as breathing difficulties, heart and skin tumors, cataracts and eye injuries. They do not adapt well to extreme weathers. It is always better to find out about the screening from the breeder. Check out if there is an affiliation with a club. This means you can check the breeder's references to make sure the breeder is not a puppy mill. Puppy mill is a place where puppies are constantly bred for financial gain without considering the integrity of the breed. It is wise to adopt a Boston Terrier from a pet rescue organization. At these organizations, most dogs are screened for health and personality problems before they are adopted out. After getting a Boston terrier, the first concern should be vaccination. You can follow up with booster vaccinations as and when needed.

The food must be appropriate for the dog's age. The first ingredient should be meat if you want a quality product. Crude protein, crude fat and fiber content should be in right proportion.

Walk your Boston terrier daily:

Housebreaking is the process of training a pet animal to eliminate (urinate and defecate) outdoors or in a specific area and not inside the house. The pet owner's aim is to break the habit of eliminating in the house, hence the term. House-training or potty training are common synonyms for housebreaking. Not all kinds of animals can be housebroken.
