History
Established way back in 1872 by half-a-dozen Boston businessmen, The Boston Globe was led by Eben Jordan (founder of the retail store Jordan Marsh), with a joint investment of $150,000. The first issue of the newspaper was published on March 4, 1872 and cost mere four cents. It was a morning daily and in 1877, The Globe began Sunday publication as well, followed by an afternoon paper called The Boston Evening Globe, one year later. The Evening Globe completed its 100 years and ceased publication in 1979.
August 1873 was marked with the paper’s long association with Taylor family when General Charles H. Taylor was appointed as the business manager. He was a staff member and printer for the Boston Traveller and soon became a partner with Jordan. Taylor soon became the president of the paper. After his demise in 1921, his son William O. Taylor succeeded him. The legacy continued until July 12, 1999 when Richard Gilman was named publisher by The New York Times Company, after the .acquisition of the paper by the New York Times.
The office of the Globe was situated on Washigton Street’s Newspaper Row for 87 years until it moved to a new location at Dorchester in 1958. It was a private company until 1973 until it was taken over by Affiliated Publications. The Globe continued to be one of the leading newspapers in US until 1993 when The Globe and Affiliated Publications were merged with the New York Times Company. It was the largest, single newspaper merger and acquisition in U.S. history. The Boston Globe thus became a wholly-owned subsidiary of The New York Times company.

The New York Times Company is popularly known as the publisher of famous newspaper The New York Times. It is an American media company which was founded by Henry Jarvis Raymond and George Jones. The first edition of The News York Times was published on September 18, 1851.
The company owns a bunch of publications like The Boston Globe, The International Herald Tribune, besides 24 regional newspapers in US. The company also owns eight local television stations and two New York City radio stations. In 2005, it had 35 web sites, including NYTimes.com, Boston.com and about.com.

It is worthy to note that they have been the winners of Pulitzer Prizes since 1966, when they were awarded the prize for Meritorious Public Service. In 1972 and 1980, they won the award for Local Reporting by The Boston Globe Spotlight Team. The award for Editorial Cartooning went to Paul Szep in 1974 and 1977. The Boston Globe won the Pulitzer Award for Meritorious Public Service in 1975. The year 1980 saw them win two more awards for Distinguished Commentary (Ellen Goodman) and Distinguished Criticism (William Henry III). The Boston Globe magazine won the award for National Reporting in 1983 while the award for Local Reporting went to The Boston Globe in 1984. The Globe won two awards for photography - Feature Photography, Stan Grossfeld (1985 ) and Spot News Photography, Stan Grossfeld (1984). The Pulitzer Award for Distinguished Beat Reporting went to David M Shribman in 1995. In 1996, the award for Distinguished Criticism went to Robert Campbell for The Globe. In 1997, they won the award for Distinguished Commentary by Eileen McNamara. In 2001, the Pulitzer Award for Distinguished Criticism went to Gail Caldwell for The Globe. The year 2003 saw then win the prize for Public Service, Boston Globe Spotlight Team. In 2005, they won the award for Explanatory Reporting by Gareth Cook.

The Boston Globe has adapted itself to the changing times and feature everything that is required to make their paper a huge success. They are fully geared up to face newer challenges put forth by competitive media like Internet, TV and radio. The very fact that this newspaper has been in the business for over one hundred and thirty-four years and is still on the top, is a clear indication that it still has a long way to go.
