Boston Cable Tv
Cable television is a video delivery service provided by a cable operator to subscribers via a coaxial cable or fiber optics. Programs are delivered without a wire to a cable operator, who in turn delivers the programs to the subscribers through a fixed wired network.
AT&T in 1927 provided the first demonstration for long distance television transmission in the United States. During the year 1947 AT&T used microwave-relay transmission system to transmit television images between New York and boston. It also connected the existing New York Washington cable to provide television facility between Boston and Washington.
United States was the pioneers in television and cable technology. One of the early television-broadcasting companies in the United States were NBC, CBS, ABC and DuMont. They were actually part of the largest radio networking systems. Most of the early television shows that were broadcasted were simulcasts of popular radio shows.
During the 1950s the market share for cable network was very low and most of the companies were operating in huge losses. This was due to the fact that owning a television was not in the reach of a common man. There were less than 7000 television sets in boston by the end of the Second World War.
The ownership of television sets skyrocketed during the first five years of 1950. This affected other major forms of entertainment available to public. During this time period witnessed, the closure of many movie theaters, due to the fact that motion pictures competed with television, which in turn had the major market in consumer attention.
When the increasing demand and heavy cost DuMont was unable to survive and had to shutdown its services during the year 1956. The ABC broadcasting company merged with United Paramount Theaters, which made ABC gain sizable financial resources to compete in the fierce television market.
Types of Frequencies Used in Cable TV
Ultrahigh Frequency (UHF) channels were introduced in 1952, after the freeze on station licensing in 1948. The next four years engineers worked out the electronic and political complexities for these additional channels. In 1962 tuners were introduced for both UHF and the earlier Very High Frequency (VHF) stations. This allowed UHF stations to compete more effectively. Their position was furthered strengthened in the 1970s with the rise of interest in cable television.
Competition from cable TV, Pay Per View TV and VCRs started heavily cutting into market share. More than
91% of the market share was controlled by the big three broadcast networks companies with prime time audiences during the 1978/9 season. This dropped to 75% in the 1986/7 season, and further to 61% in 1993/4.
Cable TV was developed during the early 1950s and began to be used in the 1950s as a way to expand the reach of network television in areas that had problems receiving broadcast signals, prompted by the desire of businesses to sell televisions in their area. In the 1960s cable stations began to import alternative broadcasts into new markets, fragmenting network reach. The networks demanded FCC regulation of the industry and this regulation slowed growth until the 1970s, when cable TV saw phenomenal growth.
The cable systems designed initially are technically capable of transmitting 36 to 60 channels. This has drastically increased in the recent years from 60 Channel capacities to more than 100 Channel capacities.
The channel capacity that the cable system offers makes it possible for the cable television service provider to provide many services. Diverse program services, including, news, business information, weather, sports, movies, special entertainment features, and special programs designed for children, women, and ethnic and racial groups.
Some cable operators also provide their own local programs and also provide access channels for public and institutional uses. They also provide leased access channels for "rent" to those wishing to show specific programs. Electronic banking, shopping, utility meter reading, and home security are some of the home services that are possible using the two-way transmission capabilities of cable television systems.
In 1965, the Federal Communications Commission first established for cable systems that received signals by microwave antennas. In March 1966, the Commission established rules for all cable systems. In March 1972, new rules regarding cable television became effective
