Student loans grants and scholarships are included in financial aid. However there is a difference between loans, grants and scholarships. While loans must be paid back grants and scholarships are provided for excellent academic record.

Student loans

There are several varieties of student loans. The first type is when the loans are made directly to the students.There are no payments that are to be made till the enrolment status of the student is half time.If the status of the student falls below the half time then the account falls in the category of grace period which is given for of six months.The loans are deferred if the student re-enrolls with a status of half time.There is no provision for a second grace period if the student drops below the half time again.The amount of loans given is limited. In case the parents apply for student loans then the limit is higher and the payments start immediately.If private student loans are provided to either parents or students then the limits are higher and no payments are to be made till graduation, however the interest begins to accrue immediately.The private student loans can be used to incur additional expenses like tuition, books, room rent and computers.

Student grants

A grant is a support scheme for students who intent to go for higher education.The scheme includes Higher Education Grant Schemes Scholarship Schemes for Vocational Education, for trainees there is Third Level Maintenance Grant Scheme and Grant Schemes for Students Attending Post Level Certificate Courses.There are special funds for disabled students. There are several aid agencies whose aim is to make college education affordable for needy students.Some financial institutions provide grants in the form of stipends that include registration fee along with travel and accommodation expenses. Grants are provided to students who attend public, proprietary and independent colleges.Additional grants are provided for those graduating for higher education.
