...Phonics, in teaching reading, is crucial for children to learn how to decode new words. English is tricky. "Ghoti" is one way to spell the word "fish!" The "gh" can sound like "f"; "o" can take on a short i sound; and "ti" can stand for an "sh" sound. I'm just playing around here, but there are many secrets to decoding using phonics.
