Atario is a language native to the planetary system of Andromeda. It is a language that is quite complex to learn and is divided into four periods: Primitive, Old, Imperial and New. I'm currently working on Vǿrliſë Atário, or new Atario.

Atário is a constructed language, meaning one that is not used by any existing populations. It was created in 2004 when I first created the Shalman Empire.

The language has been greatly influenced by existing languages such as German, Greek, Hungarian and Danish but also by non-real languages such as J.R.R. Tolkien’s Quenya and Sindarin.

The Atario alphabet consists of the following letters and sounds:

a, e, i, o, ø, u, ü, y

A/a or Á/á
The letter a in Atário is pronounced /a/, like in Spanish. In Atário letters only have one value which makes reading very easy.

E/e, É/é or ë
The letter e is pronounced /e/ like in the word “letter”. It becomes ë when placed at the end of a word.

I/i or Í/í
This letter is pronounced /i/ like in the English word “lick”.

O/o or Ó/ó
The letter o is pronounced /o/ as in the English word “orator”.

Ø/ø or Ǿ/ǿ
This letter is pronounced exactly the same as the Danish letter /ø/ or like the French eu in the word “bleu”.

U/u or Ú/ú
U is pronounced like the English /oo/ in the word “book”.

Ü/ü or Ǘ/ǘ
This letter has the exact same pronunciation as the German /ü/ in the word “über”.

Y/y or Ý/ý
Y has the exact same pronunciation as the English /ee/ in “bee”.

And the consonants are:

b, c, ć, d, ð, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, þ, q, r, s, ſ, t, v, z

B/b
B has the exact same value as it does in English.

C/c
C in Atário can only be pronounced as /k/ (“cat”) and not as /s/ as it sometimes appears in the English language.

Ć/ć
Ć is pronounced /tſ/ and has the same phonetic value as /tch/ in “Tchaikovsky”.

D/d
D has the same phonetic value as the English letter.

Ð/ð
Ð has the same phonetic value as the Icelandic ð, pronounced /th/ and in “there”.

F/f
The letter f retains its phonetic value as in English.

G/g
G is only pronounced /g/ as in “gear”. It can not be read /tz/ as in “geography”.

H/h
H is pronounced /ch/ as in “Bach”.

J/j
J is pronounced like the German j in “ja” or like y in “year”.

K/k
K has the same phonetic value as the English /k/.

L/l
L is the same in Atário as it is in English.

M/m
M has kept the same pronunciation as the English /m/.

N/n
N has kept its initial phonetic value.

P/p
P is pronounced the same as in English.

Þ/þ
Þ has the same phonetic value as the original Icelandic letter, pronounced /th/ as in “thermal”, exactly the same as the Greek Thita.

Q/q
The letter Q is a special case, as it compromises two sounds into one. It is pronounced /qu/ as in “query”.

R/r
R has a thicker pronunciation that the English r, like the Greek or Italian letter for r.

S/s
S has the same value as the English letter s.

ſ
ſ is pronounced like /sh/ in “shoes”. It does only has one form for both Capital and Lower case.

T/t
T has kept the English pronunciation.

V/v
V is pronounced like the English /v/ in “Vienna”.

Z/z
Z is pronounced like the English letter z.

Other sounds:

Ch
Ch is pronounced like the german /ch/ in "ich".

I have a few questions about your orthography.

1) Why do you have accented vowel make the same sound as the unaccented? Is this to mark stress?
2) What use is there for ë? It just shows up at the end of a word...there's no use for it, just decoration?
3) Why do you have C and K? They have the same pronunciation all the time. Use C for /tS/ and then you can eliminate a diacritic.
4) ſ seems useless. You have X left over, why not fill up the basic alphabet before you start using other letters?

Also, please, use IPA or X-SAMPA inside of //s, because what you are using aren't anything like IPA...

1) dont shoot me
2) yes its a stress mark
3) ë exists for the same reason it exists in Quenya: to remind english speakers that ITS THERE and that it doesnt loose its phonetic value
4) for the same reason Greek has 5 different kind of e's: so that kéllë and céllë are not the same words :)
5) ſ looks cool and x doesnt exist for 'historical' reasons.
6) excuse me for not knowing IPA

:)

Yes, but Greek has those Es because of language evolution. In Ancient Greek they all had different pronunciations.

And I don't see why a language could not have c and k which would have the same sound.

I like it philly_boy. I don't think you need to bother changing the ſ. A conlang doesn't have to be ultra-streamlined :) . I think I'll restart work on my yet-unnamed conlang :)

There's nothing wrong with it, I just thought I saw some issues with your orthography.

Well, just to make it clear, in Primitive Atario k was pronounced with a slight h next to it, sort of like kh in 'khan'. Later the h was dropped and both letters now have the same pronunciation :)

As for x, no language in my fictional universe has x as a seperate letter.
