In fact, eastern dialects are supposed to be closer to Qur'anic Arabic because they usually respect (and pronounce) vowel patterns and don't drop so many vowels as western dialects. But I think none of them is considered as actually closer to Qur'anic Arabic than any other because there are a lot of diversity in the lexicon as well. BTW, I've also heard that about Iraqi Arabic.

Actually I've heard this too from speakers of other dialects. I'm not sure how true it is, but I am certain that Maghrebi Arabic is the least like Classical Arabic (aside from various Arabic-based creoles) because of a strong Berber and European influence, especially from French.

I was going to start Arabic today, but much to my dismay, the Michel Thomas Arabic course teachers Egyptian Arabic and not Modern Standard. Could anyone point me in the direction of MSA courses?

Nope. You want to say شكرًا, maybe شكرًا لك يا طالب if you're feeling fancy. It looks like you tried to say "thanked" which is weird because it's an adjective.

How do you express "have been VERB-ing" in Arabic? Like "I have been fighting with Arabic for about a year" XD

I ask, because I wanted to post a horribly ungrammatical sentence or two to talk about my experiences with Arabic.

I'm pretty sure Arabic is like Spanish or French and the present tense and present progressive (-ing verbs) are the same. Meaning "I write" and "I'm writing" are both translated the same, for example: escribo, j'ecris, يكتب. Although I'm pretty sure Arabic does not follow the same tense system as English instead being more similar to Ancient Hebrew, being divided by perfect, completed actions (past), and imperfective, uncompleted actions (present and future).

Someone like Talib or Neqitan can provide a more thorough answer if need be or in the event that I am wrong. Which could be very likely. :lol:
