Another unknown writting

Postby Delodephius » Wed 30 Sep 2009 7:18 am

Does anyone know what script this is and perhaps what language? All I got from a guy I found this is that it is a form of Cyrillic used in Russia before the Romanovs, but it doesn't look like Cyrillic to me, unless I'm mistaken.

I'm going to wager that this is not a natural language at all but some sort of conscript or code.

It looks like a mix of nordic runes and theban.

Two final lines are in Cyrillic (Ustav type with ligatures, used mostly in titles of Church Slavonic manuscripts).

However I do suspect it could be a conscript. The Cyrillic text I can read somewhat (the ligatures are a bit of a problem, plus there seem to be some abbreviations) but it makes no sense. Maybe I'm reading it wrong. Oh, I just love cryptic writings! :D

Is that really Cyrillic? Can you transcribe it for us?

I recognize a couple of letters here and there, but have no idea what it might say.

It could be form of runes used by the sect called "Dukhobors". It also seems to include some Cyrillic that is stylized to the point that it is disguised.

Yeah, I found out what it is a few days ago, but I couldn't post it. It is an Old Russian secret script allegedly invented or made under the order of the Russian Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich Romanov in 1667. It was used to inscribe a text on a bell that was forged for a monastery in Zvenigorod where Tsar's rural residence was. The text:

It is actually 6 different scripts. The first 5 are conscripts the 6th is a Cyrillic title script with letters having switched meaning. The bell was destroyed in a fire, but someone has copied the text before and it exists in couple of manuscripts, although scholars have noted that there are couple of mistakes in the copies, obviously because the copyists were not enough familiar with the script.

I also found couple of other Old Russian conscripts:
«Решётка»
Secret script of Peter I the Great

You can find some other here.
