seriously - drop the vicious security precautions and incoveniences to get registered and logged in

a simple button to register and confirmation email is all that is needed

I think it is appropriate as there would be a lot of spammers etc. However, I do get what you are saying.

That's the fear, I get that. But I've been to several forums that use the traditional method for registration and it's not like those forums are crawling with spammers.
Ironically, we've had at least 1 spammer here...

I remember this security was posted to use less server space. If it's about spammers, then name a moderator to ban them, problem solved. Not that many spammers visit us...

A large number of spammers and spambots try to register on this forum - at least 10 a day, which is why I suspended the normal registration.

Then use Recaptcha. I'm pretty sure there is no bot that is able to do those. ;)
