Omniglot on YouTube!

Postby imbecilica » Thu 23 Apr 2009 10:19 am

 It was about time someone posted a video of Omniglot on YouTube and as promised, I have just uploaded a rather amateur video of Omniglot. Click here or copy and paste:

I'm sure you'll be able to recognise the last voice! Who can guess all the languages that were in the video (some of them had quite bad audio but nonetheless  )

I heard at least (in order of appearance): German, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, French, Arabic, Chinese, and English. And something that sounded a bit like Finnish, a tonal language and an Indian language, I think. Plus some Romance ones. I'm not good at recognizing languages :P
Why didn't you include Norwegian?
But, but; it's not only-only, you know!

:D I tried to include as many different languages as possible but couldn't find various languages. I should make another one but include other languages.

Thanks so much for doing that - it sounds and looks great.

You can find links to all the recordings I have of the UDHR (and the phrases and Tower of Babel text) at http://www.omniglot.com/soundfiles/.

I recognized a few of them, but mostly because I listen to the UDHR whenever I end up on a page that has a recording, so I don't actually know those languages. :P

I know this topic is old by now, but here are my guesses:

German
Dutch
Finnish
Swedish
?
Spanish
Italian
French
Greek
Arabic
?
?
Japanese
Korean
Chinese
Vietnamese
?
English
Speak: Dutch, English
Something between reading and speaking: French, German
Read: Latin, Ancient Greek

Japanese: somewhere around JLPT 4 level (out of 5), I guess. Also, I (should) know around 250-300 kanji.

The fourth is definitely not Swedish.

It sounds Scandinavian to me. Maybe not Swedish, but at least something North-Germanic.

It's not Scandinavian - I doubt it is North-Germanic at all, then I would understand at least a few loan words.

The one before English is Esperanto.

I understand the one before Spanish, so it must be Romance. I have no idea which is though.
