Reviving or Restarting Omni

Postby Dan_ad_nauseam » Fri 01 May 2009 3:23 am

At this point, if anyone managed to save where we were before the change, let's try to pick up where we left off.

Otherwise, let's start the Omni-evolution project over.

I could only find the first three pages in Google's Caché:
Page 1
Page 2
Page 3

Plus don't forget the lexicon Mayatec posted and the "Grammar" originals.

I'm certainly willing to continue where we left off. In fact, I've still got the old "summary" post saved:

Determiners:

Noun phrases can be marked with a generic determiner k- which can be inflected for ergativity (agent of transitive verb) or absolutivity ("subject" of intransitive verb or object of transitive verb) with suffixes:
Code: Select all
Ergative: ke
Absolutive: ka

There is also a definite article os/-os.

Nouns:

-Plural number can be indicated by a suffix -p or with a reduplication of the first syllable in the stem:

hana "book" > [b]hahana "books"
tik "word" > [b]titik, tikp/tihp? "words"

There are several cases that can be utilized:
Code: Select all
dos: instrumental
l(e)-: genitive
ma: locative/adessive

Verbs:

--Marked for person and number with suffixes:

Code: Select all
sg.    pl.
1 -o  1 -op
2 -i  2 -ip
3 -a  3 -ap
Indef. "it/that" -ak

--In "proto-Omni" tense is marked with auxiliaries preceding the verb, whereas in "vulgar-Omni" suffixes are used in addition to person and number suffixes:
Code: Select all
Proto-Omni:
Present: yo
Past:    yal
Future:  ye

Vulgar-Omni
Present: -y(o)
Past:    -(ya)l,-lya
Future:  -ye

In Proto-Omni a k- prefix is used on tense auxiliaries to form interrogatives (kyo, kyal, kye):

Yo juni. "You write"
Kyo juni. "Do you write?"

-Object agreement can occur as a prefix on verbs:

Code: Select all
1 lo-
2 li-
3 la-

...and also with free morphemes after the verb:

Code: Select all
1 hono
2 hani
3 la

Other Pronouns include:

ama: there
kusak: that
kusehu: this one
kusey: this
kusku: that one

-Negation is achieved with a circumfix auxiliary si....sa in "proto-Omni" and a preceding auxiliary si (or prefixed s'-) in "vulgar-Omni".

By the way, who did you used to be, Dan?

To give a more complete answer for Jayan:

Omni was started on the old Omniglot forum as a sort of "open-source" conlang by several forum members. It sort of died completely a couple of times and then was restarted just before the old forum crashed. The basic methodology behind the most recent Omni-restart is that it should develop as a language in the same way that a normal/natural language would--no overt structuring or complicated planning. Anyone can suggest anything about any part of the language. The only real rule seemed to be "don't suggest anything too drastic." If you want the language to change in a certain direction, suggest small changes that might nudge it along.

The Omni-restart began as a really analytic language but shifted to a much more synthetic form a little later on, with most particles and determiners being turned into suffixes (you can see the bare-bones of the grammar in the summary post above).

So basically, feel free to join in!

And on another note, during the forum downtime I took a shot at translating the first sentence of the UDHR:

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

Ewelaym edam duos heyra ga unwa for serta ga holop. Lapka ossemay ommeska ga omwaka ga yarne elsonayp laposka dos atal l’foru.

born.3rd.pres.pl “all are born" / person.all “all people” / be.inf. “being” / free / and / equal / about-concerning / dignity / and / rights //
//them.abs / give.3rd.pres / reason / and / conscience / and / must-should / act.3rd.pres.pl “they treat” / them.def.abs “themselves, each other” / aux.instr / spirit / gen.brotherhood //

Hopefully the gloss is clear. I tried to separate the individual units a bit more distinctly.

Man oh man. I forgot everything that about Omni. All of the conjugations, declensions, prepositions, everything! I feel so guilty now. Now as for the question, how many of us forumists are willing to even continue this project?

Me I think? Not sure about it. And what happened to Mayatec? Too lazy to create a new account?
