Haha, title-stealing!

The other day I invented a way of writing English using the Cyrillic alphabet, and here it is:

а /æ/
я /ɑː/
е /ɛ/
э /ɛː/
о /ɐ/, /ʊ/
ѿ /ɔː/
ы /ɪ/
и /i/, /iː/
у /ə/, /ʌ/
ю /uː/
ъ /ɜː/

Дыфþоҥз:
ӓ /aɪ/
ә /aʊ/
ё /eɪ/
ӧ /ɔɪ/
ө /əʊ/

б /b/
ч /ʧ/
д /d/
ӂ /ʤ/
d /ð/
ф /f/
г /g/
һ /h/
к /k/
х /x/
л /l/
м /m/
н /n/
ҥ /ŋ/
п /p/
р /r/, /ɹ/
с /s/
ш /ʃ/
т /t/
þ /θ/
ц /ts/
в /v/
ь /w/
й /j/
з /z/
ж /ʒ/

It uses the letters "d" and thorn out of Latin, but they fit alright in text.

What doest thou thinketh?

:ugeek:

Amusingly, I've been toying with my own English-in-Cyrillic alphabet utilising thorn....

You know that capitalising I in English is a historical relic, brought about by the fact that i tended to get mistaken for a component of a neighbouring letter in earlier handwriting, don't you? Slavishly porting this anomaly over into a foreign orthography seems quite senseless.

Overall, though, I like your mapping of vowel symbols far better than choc_pud's.

Alright linguoboy, come off your high horse! I've thought of a better version since then:

Ӏɪ /ɪ/
Ии /i/, /iː/

ай /aɪ/
аў /aʊ/

What does the collective think of that then? It does not use any letters not native to Cyrillic, which may previous one did. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. Oh yeah, and it saves space compared to our current Latin script. One or two of the letters are not correct here because the forum's font can't show the right ones.

Just a thought, but since you've included 'ps' (a relic from Greek borrowings not pronounced as /ps/), I use Цц for the T in 'tion', since most Ts in English that I can think of are formed via pluralisation, which, in my opinion, would cause great confusion (Parent -> Parents).

Aye, true enough. I may get rid of them, it depends how I feel after a bit!

Mine is not a high horse. Did you not mean to solicit our opinions when you wrote, "What doest [sic] thou thinketh [sic]?"?

I see you try to use as many Cyrillic letters as possible, old and new ones. The text looks odd, I must say  I wonder, where is then letter 'ouk'? I copy paste it here: ѹ. But I don't know whether it appears correct. It loks like a diphtong 'oy'. But I like more an other variant of this letter (like an O with a V on the top). It is pronounced like [u:] or probably like [ɔu].

I think that ouk would cause confusion if I used it, plus I don't think it is needed. I've included many archaic letters mainly because I like how they look (especially "Cyrillic capital letter iotified big yus: Ѭ).

Okay, I've had a new idea. I was thinking the other day about the Cyrillic alphabet and that I like the capital letters but not the small letters, as they are, let's face it, rather boring! They're literally just smaller versions of the capitals. So I've invented an alphabet that could be used for writing English (particúlarly Received Pronunciation) which is based upon the Cyrillic alphabet but has nicer, more cursive-looking miniscúles. I've designed it in such a way that it can be typed on a computer using just the Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Armenian and IPA letters and symbols, and it actúally, in my opinion, looks quite nice. I've named it Latillic, after its main donors, the Latin and Cyrillic alphabets.

Dúe to the lack of rendering support on some browsers I amn't sure if this will show up properly, but I'll have a go at converting the above paragraph into Latillic:

Ukȷ, ր'b xad a hŭю րdul. Я րoз þıŋkıŋ δu уδl dȷ aɓʊt δu Cıpıηık aηφaɓɛt ahd δat ր ηրk δu kanıtlη ηɛtlз ɓуt hot δu cmɔη ηɛtlз, aз δȷ ɦ, ηɛtc φȷc ıt, pɦδl ɓɔpıŋ! Δȷ ɦ ηıtlplηu ɣуct cmɔηl bvɰlhз ob δu kanıtlηз. Cվ ր xab ıhbɛhtıd ah aηφlɓɛt δat kуd ɓu ŭюзd φɔ pրtıŋ Iŋrηıɯ (nltıkŭюηуηu Pıcubd Пpվhуhcuȷɯlh) ўıɥ ıз ɓȷct ınoh δu Cınıηık aηφlɓɛt ɓуt xaз hրcl, mɔ kvcıb-ηуkıŋ mıhıckŭюηз. Я xab dıзրhd ıt ıh cуɥ a րȷ δat ıt kah ɓu tրnt oh a komnŭюtl ŭюзıŋ ɣуct δu Лatıh, Cıpıηık, Гpuk, Λmuhılh ahd IΦA ηɛtlз ahd cımɓуηз, ahd ıt aktɥуηu, ıh mր lnıhŭуh, ηlkc kўրt hրc. Я xab hȷmd ıt Лatıηık, ɦφtl ıtc mȷh dվhlз, δu Лatıh ahd Cıpıηık aηφaɓɛtc.

So, what does the collective think? I've had to change one of the symbols above from what it should be: for the phoneme /ŋ/, instead of the letter eng there should be a letter "haitch-with-hook", which you can get in IPA but apparently not on here.

Some of my assignments may seem a little strange, particularly the Armenian ones; all I've done with those is found myself in need of a readily available letter and then picked one at random from said alphabet, regardless as to its usual Armenian pronunciation.

I'd be interested in nay comments anyone has, and particularly if anyone has done anything similar in the past?
