(Alternatively: "Ich habe Deutsch in der Schule gelernt", which is how I, with my southern accent, would say it. Except that's a lie; I'd have to say instead "Ich habe Deutsch an der Uni gelernt".)

sorry about the spelling.

Spelling's a minor point as long as you've got the grammar down. The only problem with your spelling is remembering to write sch for [ʃ] instead of sh. Outside of recent borrowings from English (e.g. der Crash), sh in German represents only s followed by h, e.g. Weisheit, aushacken, etc. So it can never be the first two letters in a word.
