I'm currently working on a con-script either an an alternate for English (which is what it started as ) or to apply to the conlang my friend and I are working on. I'm coming here for an opinion on how to write the vowels. The script I'm working on takes mainly from Hebrew for inspiration, it's written right-to-left, top-to-bottom like Arabic or Hebrew.

1, do you prefer diacritic marks or actual letters for vowels?
2, if diacritic marks, where do you believe they should be? Above the consonant as in Arabic, below the consonant as in Hebrew, or something different all together?

I could take either, but if you're interested in the former, I suggest you take a look at Tengwar, and also Devanagari, to which it bears some similarities.
In both these languages there are diacritics above and below the consonants.

Ah, yes, you are quite correct. My study of both languages is quite lacking, and I haven't noticed that they have diacritics above and below. Thank you again, for pointing that out.

You should also look at Yiddish for an example of a Hebrew script converted to use actual letters for vowels.

It depends I think. If you have a language with a very common vowel, abugidas like Devanāgarī are pretty useful. I suppose a very unvocalic language would be pretty suited to diacritical vowels, because you could probably leave them out. And I think vocalic languages need characters for vowels, otherwise it would just get confusing.

I developed an abjad much like Arabic in about 5 minutes. It's going to be like Uzbek, using Latin alphabet, Cyrillic and and Arabic-type script.
