I'm currently working on a con-script either an an alternate for English (which is what it started as ) or to apply to the conlang my friend and I are working on. I'm coming here for an opinion on how to write the vowels. The script I'm working on takes mainly from Hebrew for inspiration, it's written right-to-left, top-to-bottom like Arabic or Hebrew.

1, do you prefer diacritic marks or actual letters for vowels?
2, if diacritic marks, where do you believe they should be? Above the consonant as in Arabic, below the consonant as in Hebrew, or something different all together?

Thanks in advance!

I could take either, but if you're interested in the former, I suggest you take a look at Tengwar, and also Devanagari, to which it bears some similarities.

In both these languages there are diacritics above and below the consonants.

Alright, I will do that thanks!

Ah, yes, you are quite correct. My study of both languages is quite lacking, and I haven't noticed that they have diacritics above and below. Thank you again, for pointing that out.

You should also look at Yiddish for an example of a Hebrew script converted to use actual letters for vowels.

It depends I think. If you have a language with a very common vowel, abugidas like Devanāgarī are pretty useful. I suppose a very unvocalic language would be pretty suited to diacritical vowels, because you could probably leave them out. And I think vocalic languages need characters for vowels, otherwise it would just get confusing.

I developed an abjad much like Arabic in about 5 minutes. It's going to be like Uzbek, using Latin alphabet, Cyrillic and and Arabic-type script.

I'm curious about the result! Feel free to post pictures of the script!

Thanks for the interest :)

Just found the cable for my camera, and my parents reminded me that even though our flatbed scanner won't work, our 'industrial strength' printer has a scanner. So I'll get everything written out and post it here!

Ok well here is the Cyrillic and Latin versions, I'll post IPA but I can't be 100% certain they're correct because it's been a while since we created the phonology and I didn't know the IPA at that point (and still don't):

<b> b Бб
<d> d Дд
<ŋ> ň Нн
<v> v Вв
<s> s Сс
<ʒ> z Зз
<x> h Хх
<l> l Лл
<p> p Пп
y Яя

<æ> a Аа
<a> â Ä ä
<ɛ> e Ее
<i> i Ии
<ɔ> o Оо
<u> u Уу

looks interesting. Almost no plosives, lots of fricatives, only one nasal and no use of "r".

I'm curious about your vocab!
