I'll try to translate it for you.

See here laddies, if you're [?] of English dialects then the kids speak in a right grand one to begin with, do you know? You're not so [?] with the Yorkshire if you cannot understand this [?]! No, lad!

But I think we should get choc_pud to explain it for us. ;)

Well done, that is quite close! Let me translate:

Look here chaps, if you're talking about English dialects then the Yorkshire dialect is a good one to start with, if you know what I mean? You can't understand Yorkshire very well if you can't understand this yourself! No, lad!

So you were quite close, not bad.

:ugeek:

The Caribbean has a range of dialects as well. There are some who would want to call them other languages completely, but that is debatable still. Certainly within the Caribbean, they think they are speaking English! (Although they might say it is "bad English".)

Each island has its own dialect: Barbados, Trinidad, Jamaica, Guyana (although it is not an island, it is culturally part of the Caribbean), St. Lucia, Bahamas, etc.

Here is an excerpt from a Louise Bennet poem (from Jamaica) with translation:

Wat a joyful news, Miss Mattie,
I feel like me heart gwine burs'
Jamaica people colonizin
Englan in reverse.

Translation:

What joyful news, Miss Mattie.
I feel like my heart will burst.
Jamaicans are colonising
England in reverse.

Dem a-pour out o'Jamaica,
Everybody future plan
Is fe get a big-time job
An settle in de mother lan.

What a islan! What a people!
Man an woman, old and young
Jusa pack dem bag an baggage
An tun history upside dung!

Translation:

They are pouring from Jamaica.
Everybody's future plan
Is to get a high-class job
and settle in the motherland.

What an island! What a people!
Men and women, old and young
are packing their bags and barrels
and turning history up side down.
