What verbs do you use to mean "to be" in the sense of "to exist" (as in "To be or not to be") or "to be in a place" (as in "Where are you?" "I'm here")? What about predicate nouns? How does one say "to be a man" or "to be an author"?

"To exist"? Well, I would have made it "Yé toké" = "to exist"

Hmm...I'm not sure. :oops:

"To be a man"? Um, if I understand your post right = Wó zí ka'gé

In my conlang-in-progress, I divide "to be" into three components:

There are two copulas and a null copula.

1. The null is used for statives; the adjective is conjugated as a verb. Habitual aspect is used for permanent traits.

jyf-atw-u-p
3d pers -neut. -pauc.- nom.

t-uʔ -daH-h-u-va-ŋ-e:st
neut.- pauc.-tall-neut.-pauc.-pres.-hab.-obs.

They (mixed gender, fewer than five) are tall. (I see.)

2. [zeθ] (be) is used for exact identity. It is irregular in person, gender, and number. [zeθ] never takes a reinforcing prefix, but does require a reflexive marker on the subject. The participatory evidential marker usually will apply.

steff-a-θata-p
1st masc.-sing.-refl.-nom.

θ- eʔ-sapεkt-θen-aθ-a-tl,
masc.-sing.-composed of iron-man-sing.-acc.

se-ŋ-iva-pɹai
am (masc.)-pres.-hab.-partic.

I am Ironman.

3. [kima-] (stand) is used for location and class membership. Class membership requires reflexives and progressive aspect.

ʔand-ap-a-θata-st
‘And-fem.-sing.-refl.-nom.

p- eʔ-dilig-adw-i-ðata-sεt
fem.-sing.-councilor-neut. (mixed anim.)-pl.-refl.-loc.

t- iʔ-kima-p-a-ŋ-pu-wik
neut. (mixed anim.)-pl.-stand-fem.-sing.-pres.-prog.-rep.

‘And is one of the councilors (I hear).

(As can be seen from the glosses, this conlang's features include the following:

1. Agglutinative morphology;
2. Agreement between nouns and following words, as shown by prefixes to the following word;
3. A singular-paucal-plural number system;
4. Three genders, with animates following actual sex;
5. Tense and aspect marking on verb;
6. Evidential marking on verbs;
7. [-bal], referring to composition, as a productive suffix;
8. SOV as the basic sentence structure.)

I was reading some of your post, Dan_ad_nauseam, but some of it are boxes and weird looking Korean symbols for some strange reason. Is that your Conlang? :oops:

Zí Méŋkaháni ga’api?

I actually like the sound of that. :mrgreen:

It looks like his conlang to me. I don't see squares or anything. I think you need to install something to your PC if you are seeing that.

Thank you Emma :)

I'm still working on the language though. I hope to make a thread (and by that time the Admin allows editing posts) for my language as soon as I can. But for now, since I only just began conlanging, I want to learn and hopefully if I may, ask questions. :)

*I will look into the problem. I just checked through other threads and saw mostly the same. I guess I am missing something xD*

No, it should be IPA symbols.

So what do you guys think of what I have so far? :oops:

@Dan_ad_nauseam:
Through a check of my PC, I was missing a lot of font packages and Firefox wasn't show much of the forum's posts. (had recently updated to Firefox 4). Its fixed now :)

I understand there isn't much to go by, as of right now. I'm trying to get more done, but I'm really stuck on grammar. :(

I'll make a thread whenever I can, I promise. :)
