I accidentally picked retroflex approximant but I meant to pick the alveolar appoximant.

The problem with French is that it puts the uvular rhotic in consonant clusters & at the end of syllables. I don't have a problem with words like roche or mari. But it's the words like frère & croître that I don't like the sound of.

Fair point. I think the cluster /rw/ is awkward, like in croissant.

I believe I've been the first to vote for [ʀ]. But it's such a cool rhotic! I even adopted it in my Portuguese idiolect where standard is /ɦ/.

BTW, what constitutes a rhotic consonant? As stated, where I live people have /ɦ/ for <r>, <rr>.

I've never heard [ʀ] in a Brazilian vernacular!

For the purpose of this thread, a rhotic consonant is any of the sounds listed in the poll choices. These are the sounds for which the IPA symbol resembles the letter "r".

I stuck in between the alveolar trill (I don't think the trills can be dental or otherwise I've never seen one) and the two (or three if you have the fricative separate from the approximant) uvulars.

My own dialect of english seems to have a slightly fronted uvular approximant for its bunched-r.

They can. I think Telugu has a dental trill.

I would like to see a resource about that, but sometimes they include it with the dental consonants just for simplicity's sake.
