Do you think people confused the 1920s with the 1820s? Or the 1990s with the 1890s? It won't be too long before references to the 2020s will outnumber references to the 1920s. The shorter term will come to mean "twenty twenties" and a retronym will come into use for the 1920s. "The Roaring Twenties" will always mean the 1920s, of course. (Some wags went around calling the 1990s "
the Gay Nineties", but it never caught on among most queers, let alone the general public.)
