I would ask for text books, and study them in detail, so that I could be in the same ballpark as the teacher. I would attempt to determine why the student is not understanding the material, and of course tailor my tutoring to the student's needs.

I believe the best schools in the country accept students who not only have good grades, but are able to show the ability to critically reason.
