...The whole language approach of teaching reading that is so prevalent is schools does not work for everyone. Some children need a very explicit, step-by-step approach to decoding written words, and these children benefit tremendously from phonics instruction. Phonics can make a difference not only with new readers, but also with older children for whom reading continues to be difficult.
