...I also lived with a host family which spoke no English. In addition to my studies, I volunteered to instruct Russian students English as a native language. I was a member of a choir while abroad, where we sang Russian traditional and folk music.

...When working with a new student I like to start right away with a basic vocabulary and simple conversational exchanges. This way the student increases in confidence to engage in everyday dialog. As the student becomes more advanced I slowly develop the lesson content so it is eventually conducted completely in Portuguese.

I'm a UC Berkeley Engineering Graduate, currently employed as a professional engineer by the State of California. I can tutor math, physics, chemistry, materials science, and chemical engineering. ...Different students will respond better to one style of teaching versus another. My job as a tutor is to find out what teaching style or presentation will make my student comprehend the subject at hand better. First, I try to find out what sparks the interest in the student and then try to relate the subject matter that he or she has difficult with to that interesting topic.
