Language quiz

Here is a recording of a mystery language. Do you know or can you guess which language it is and where it’s spoken.

Clue: it sounds like a language that’s probably familiar, but isn’t that language.

  1. I don’t think it’s Franco-Provençal, unless Franco-Provençal is really, really different from Occitan, and my understanding was that they are fairly close (although distinct). Romansh maybe?

  2. Sounds similar to French (duh). Other than that I don’t know.
Probably a dialect southeast of france.

  3. Language: Wallon (Walon)
Spoken in: Wallonia (Belgium), France and the U.S.A.
    Speakers: about 600,000

    Info from wikipedia

  4. I’d say it’s either Norman, Guernésiais or Jèrriais. I don’t think it’s Wallon, though.

    d.m.f.

  5. Jehudá got it – it is Breton (Brezhong), which is spoken in Brittany by about 365,000 people. The recording comes from YouTube and the clip includes French subtitles

I thought it was French when I first heard it (hence the clue), but realised it wasn’t when I listened more closely.

  6. Darn it, I was thinking it was Celtic but didn’t write anything because I wasn’t very sure and then everybody else thought Romance. Breton is spoken pretty close to where people guessed, though.

  7. I never realised Breton was spoken with a French accent… I found that clip confusing, and I speak Gaelic and French!!!

I was in Luxembourg in September – their language is confusing to the ear too. It is Germanic, but its accent is very French.
