First blog anniversary

I started this blog exactly a year ago, so today is its first anniversary. It currently contains 319 posts and 3,213 comments, and is visited by around 300 people a day. Unfortunately it also attracts a huge amount of spam posts – over 30,000 to date – fortunately the spam filters catch most of these.

When I took my first tentative steps into the blogsphere, I was a bit worried that I wouldn’t be able to find enough things to write about, but so far I’ve managed to write posts almost every day, and enjoy writing them as well. While perhaps not every post is a perfectly honed gem, I do try my best to make them interesting and informative.

I decided to give the blog a new theme today – hope you like it.

  1. Wow, this new theme is absolutely beautiful. Good job! Green is my favourite colour.

  2. I don’t know where they’re from, but they do remind me of various types of Scandinavian artwork I’ve seen before.

  3. Congratulations on the first year anniversary and I’m really liking the new theme. I enjoy checking in on the blog several times a week, you do a great job with it. Keep up the great work!`

  4. Congratulations on your first year. This is one of the few blogs I check on regularly. Well done, perfectly honed or not. 🙂

  5. Congrats on a strong first year! The new theme looks great (and has driven me to read Omniglot outside of the feed reader).

  6. Pretty nifty new theme; you’ve always seemed to post about interesting things almost everyday. Keep up the awesome work. 😉

  7. I submitted a comment, but it didn’t work.
    Anyway, here it is (again)
    Happy 1st blog-birthday.
I’ve enjoyed it from the beginning.

  8. Indeed, happy blog-versary, Simon, and to many languages more! I too am liking this new theme already, and I’ve only been looking at it for about a minute!

(Oh, BTW, Simon, did you ever answer the March 18th language quiz? If so, I can’t seem to find your answer. Just FYI.)

  9. That’s something to celebrate. It’s really interesting to check in on the blog several times a week. The variety of subjects spans a lot of territory. It’s also challenging. I never guess the correct languages from the tapes, but reading the more informed visitors’ guesses with their explanations reveals a logic that has influenced my approach to listening. I’m getting better already. Before visiting Omniglot the Blog, I had no prior exposure to Gaelic, or the other languages of the British Isles. I’ve also learned some more about Chinese through the posts. It’s a lot of fun, and the work you put into holding Omniglot together is much appreciated. The site is so vast, I have only scratched the surface. I think you must be a very busy man, and certainly a dedicated one. Happy anniversary. The ancient sculpture in the green forest looks great and omnimysterious.

  10. Tom – I’ve posted the answer to the March 18th language quiz now. Tadhg got it right.

By the way, if any of you would like to send me audio recordings or texts for the language quizzes, please send them to the usual address.

  11. Simon: My heartfelt congratulations from one who is an almost-daily reader of you blog, if not always a writer of comments! You are doing an incredibly fine piece of work, and I believe it is appreciated all over the world. So here’s to you from all-too-warm Brasil [which I pointedly always spell with an _s_].

Your new design is beautiful. I can only say: Keep up the good work!

The header reminds me of the Faithful Stone of the Drúadan, about which more (for instance) here: http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/default.asp?url=http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/f/faithfulstone.html
[Had to put in my tuppence worth of Tolkienian stuff] 8^)

  12. Lá Breithe Shona do do Bhlog! 😛 🙂
    I like the new look …… it’s more irish-like 🙂

Happy Paddy Day ….though late by now 🙂

  13. Simon, that’s a great theme and better than the other one for sure! Congratulations for your first year with this blog! I hope you keep up the good work! 😉

  14. Yes, the new theme is really beautiful, although I was ‘shocked’ at first and had to check if I really got the right address. 😉

It looks much more attractive now, with some color in it. Yet it’s not too much – just a nice green. 🙂
    Well done.

And congratulations on your blog’s first year anniversary.
Even though I’m two days too late. 😉

  15. zol es lebn biz hundert-tsvantsik!!! (It should live to be 120- how old Moshe was when he died)
