Here’s a recording in a mystery language.

Can you guess the language and where it’s spoken?

Definitely Finnic, not sure if it’s Estonian or Finnish or something else though.

It’s a southern Finnic language called Estonian. One of my favorite languages.

I’m also going with Estonian, due to the clear differences in vowel length.

I don’t know whether it is Estonian or not but I would’ve thought the choice of Estonian for this week’s quiz would’ve been too easy especially since there are a few Omniglot regulars who post here that if not speak the language have a broad knowledge on the subject. So could it be an Estonian dialect?

Finnish is my first language, so I know it’s not Finnish ;-) Sounds like Estonian.

Eesti keele — Estonian.

Oops, that should have been ‘keel’.

Estonian. This is a dummy text to make the comment longer.

Definitely Estonian

Estonian or it could be Võro.

Now I’m really guessing, but what about Veps?

The answer is Estonian (eesti), which is spoken mainly in Estonia.

The recording comes from ERR (Eesti Rahvusringhääling).
