This is a lovely Welsh word that looks impossible to pronounce to non-Welsh speakers. It actually sounds something like goo-lib - both w and y are vowels in Welsh.

yep, w is a vowel in welsh, but along with i it can be a consonant too which is the case here, so its actually pronounced /gwli:b/ i.e. long vowel, one syllable. also y has two pronunciations (apart from the usual short/long distinction), so gwlyb is /gwli:b/ but elsewhere you get a schwa: gwlypach /’gwl@paX/, gwlypa(f) /’gwl@pa(v)/, gwlychu /’gwl@Xi/. by the way, in south wales, we tend to drop the intervocalic /w/ in speech: gwlyb /gli:b/, gwraig /graIg/, gwneud /(g)neId/. it’s pronounced in more formal contexts, and of course in the national anthem “gwlad, gwlad!” /gwla::d gwla:::d/! hope that helps.
