Chris C. ...The trick I use is to say it in its expanded form when reading the sentence; e.g., "The dog ate its bone" would be correct, while "the dog ate it's bone" would not. You would determine this by saying, "The dog ate it is bone." Knowing that sentence doesn't make sense, you would then use the possessive pronoun "its" in the sentence. I have been proofreading documents for my entire career.
