Auto liability insurance

Every car has met at least one accident. So having a car insurance is worthwhile. But to have a car insurance that is exactly fitted to your needs is difficult to find. If you have too little of insurance, most of the charges in case of an accident may not be taken care of. And if you go in for a huge amount of insurance, though you are well protected in case of an accident, the premium that you would have to pay to keep the policy live would be too high. In addition to the damages to your own car, there are chances that another person or property of another person is also involved in the accident.

And the damages caused by the accident of your car to another person or car is to be paid by you Hence most of the states include liability as an important part of car insurance and has made it mandatory. Liability insurance covers the cost of damages to another person and vehicle in an automobile accident caused by you.45 states in the country has mandated the purchase of a minimum of auto liability insurance. The state of South Carolina requires that you register as an uninsured motorist if you do not have auto liability insurance; Tennessee requires proof of financial responsibility in case you opt out of auto liability insurance.

New Hampshire and Wisconsin dont mandate auto liability insurance on their drivers. And the minimum set amount of auto liability insurance varies from state to state. There are two types of liability insurance, body liability insurance and property liability insurance. Body liability insurance protects you against the cost of the damages to another person which includes the cost of medical care also and property liability would take care of the cost of the vehicle repair or replacement. This also covers the charges for any damage to immovable property of another person. For example, if you hit the fence of another person with your car, property liability would take care of the cost of the repair of the fence. Most of the companies offering car insurance would specify the amount of liability insurance in the policy itself. And when you see the amounts mentioned in the policy, it would be something as 50/100/25 which is called split limits meaning these are the amounts of coverage under each section of the insurance. In the above example,$50000 would be the coverage amount for bodily injury to another person,$100000 would be the coverage for bodily injury caused to everyone and $25000 would be the coverage amount for damage to property.

The states which have made auto liability insurance mandatory in car insurance also has set limits to a minimum

liability insurance. This is to ensure that each person has at least a minimum amount of liability insurance. This amount varies from state to state. Most of the car owners feel that having liability insurance is a waste of money which is not true as in case of an unfortunate accident, this would cover most of the charges which you otherwise would have to shell out of your pocket. And hence it is always worth having a little more than the mandated minimum. The basic liability coverage of car insurance should be something like 50/100/25 as mandated by most states. And additional auto insurance becomes cheaper as you buy more. And before purchasing the car liability insurance, you should make sure that the bodily injury coverage is adequate. There are certain things which are directly related to the premium amount calculated for you. If you are a safe driver, you get points which would reduce the premium. This would mean not having an accident in the past three years.

And if you are driver who prefers to take the public transport system to driving the car, this again fetches you some points. The premium amount also depends on the make of the car. If you drive a high profile car, you would have to pay more as premium for car insurance. Also installation of certain security devices like airbags, automatic seatbelts etc would also fetch you some discounts in the premium amount. Also shopping around for the best deal you can get is a way of lowering your car insurance premium as different companies offer same insurance coverage at different costs. Get the quotes from several companies and compare the benefits and premium before deciding on one particular company. This would help you save some money on the insurance. Also ensure that the company that you are going for is financially sound and pays their dues in time. Also in addition to the basic liability coverage in the car insurance, you can go for an umbrella policy which is additional coverage over the liability coverage that you have in the basic policy. Having umbrella coverage would be even more worthwhile if you own a home or other valuable items.

In case you are sued as responsible for an accident caused by your car and are unable to pay up for all the damages and other costs, your house or other property or valuables might be at risk which would be taken into consideration as payment modes of the damages that you caused. The coverage under the standard auto liability insurance remains the same for a rental car also. But in case you have an accident while driving a rented car, the rental company may charge for administrative costs, loss of income, replacement charges etc which in total may be well above the limits of your standard policy coverage. Hence it would be wise to have additional coverage in case you plan to drive a rented car. So after consideration of all the aspects of having a liability coverage in the car insurance, the fact that paying some money as premium for this insurance is not a waste of money considered against the costs that you would have to incur in case of an accident where you are considered at fault. And as always, it would be wise to do some research before deciding on one particular policy by a particular company to ensure that you get the best deal possible.
