The Boston Mecical Center has a wide specialization in all domain of health care which is more than sixty six categories. In Medicine faculty alone, it has several departments like General Surgery Critical Care Medicine, Medicine Administration, Medicine Cardiology, Medicine Endocrinology- Diabetes -Nutrition, Medicine Gastroenterology, Medicine General Internal Medicine, Medicine Geriatrics, Medicine Hematology/Oncology, Medicine Hypertension, Medicine Infectious Diseases, Medicine Nephrology, Medicine Occupational & Environmental Medicine, Medicine Pulmonary & Critical Care and Allergy, Medicine Rheumatology, Medicine Women Health/General Internal Medicine and so on. Most of the departments are open from Monday to Friday for five days a week supported by 24 hours on-call services but care services are open on all days of the week.
It is next to impossible to specify the detail activities of all the departments and care clinics of this well diversified institution but if we have a look at the activities of its cardiothoracic surgery department, it will be amply clear that how critical medical care services in this field is being provided by this wing. This unit is situated in Newton Pavilion, 88, East Newton Street, Suite B-102, Boston and is one of the oldest and most prestigious medical facility in the whole of the United States. This particular department has done most pivotal work in the filed of cardiothoracic surgery through Heparin-bonded circuits, minimally invasive bypass, valvular and general thoracic surgical procedures. It was established in the year 1948 which has entered in the pioneering field of robotic assisted surgery for mitral valve repair and atrial arrhythmia surgery. The state- of- the-art facility provides full surgical procedures inclusive of bypass surgery, off-pump bypass grafting, valvular surgery using advanced and durable bioprosthetic valves, aortic surgery for complex replacements and repairs through a minimally invasive approach. In treatment of lung cancer, esophageal cancer and benign esophageal diseases, new cutting-edge technologies like radiofrequency ablation, photodynamic therapy and sublobar resection with combination intra-operative brachytherapy, I-125 seed implants are being used by the department for reduction in sufferings and best medical treatment of these maladies which is very laudable. New inventions and application of newer technologies are so common in this department that a technically simple and fast implant procedure for mitral valve insufficiency, evaluation of new devices to prevent further dilation, high intensity focused ultrasound to treat atrial fibrillation and treatment for Ischemic heart failure are being so sophisticated but so commonplace here.
Some of the special expertise areas of this department, except as narrated above, are heart laser system for performing transmyocardial revascularization, implantation of left ventricular assist device (LVAD) for management of advanced heart failure and bridge to cardiac transplantation, endoscopic radial and vein harvesting, traumatic aortic transactions and so on. The Department also continues to be a leader in developing optimal models for delivering cardiac and general thoracic services.
The most beautiful aspect of this institution is, as we learn from the activities and level of specialty services offered by its cardiothoracic surgery department, is that it does not compromise its ability to provide most advanced and cutting-edge technologies for the sake of its objective of providing affordable and efficient treatment to the community. So the intention and commitment of the management of this institution has not changed despite the level of efficacy and expertise with which it offers its services to the patients. This is an exemplary attitude which you should salute. The wide spectrum of care services and medical facilities is so startling that a look at the vast spectrum of services deserves. There is a breast health program for women with breast problems and unusual mammograms. The Cardiovascular Center (CVC) is an international referral center where high-quality, cost-effective cardiac and vascular care is provided by using state-of-the-art technology. The Center for Digestive Disorders, established in 1999, is a center for evaluation and treatment of a wide range of digestive disorders by a host of interdisciplinary team of physicians, surgeons and other clinical experts. This center has seven subspecialty cores headed an eminent member of the gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery divisions.
Thoracic malignancies of lung, esophagus, and chest wall are treated at the Center for Thoracic Oncology. In dentistry, patients are referred to appropriate specialty areas for extensive dental care treatment. It has a separate department for pediatric patients which provides comprehensive services for children and adolescents up to the age of 14. Departments like Dermatology dealing with skin ailments, Family medicine offering general medical care and nursing home care, Critical Care medicine for high risks patients, Foot care specialists or podiatric surgeons with a multidisciplinary approach for prevention and treatment of diabetic wounds and foot problems, Transplant surgery for kidney transplants and renal failures, Medicine for Infectious diseases for AIDS and STDs, Occupational and environmental medicine, ophthalmology for all levels of eye care are some of the jewels in the crown of this great medical institution. Different departments within medicine faculty treat patients with allergic problems, rheumatic patients, women general health care, geriatrics for older patients. Similarly, general surgery has the widest connotations within the different branches of its general surgery department. Treatment for children is astoundingly divided between its 18 branches of child treatment facility which includes Adolescent Medicine, Asthma/Allergy, Cardiology, Child Development, Critical Care, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Hematology/Oncology, Neonatology, Ophthalmology and Orthopedic Surgery.
BMC also plays an important role in general counseling, study programs, social medical care for training like Dr. Nancy Kressin's project to train pediatricians in health counseling and improving the oral health of refugees. So this great grand institution is a regimental force in health care of Boston and its adjoining areas.
