New York is a state in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern regions of the United States. With 62 countries, it is the country's third populous state. New York's gross state product in 2005 was $963.5 billion, ranking third in size behind larger states of California and Texas. New York is the leading center of banking, finance and communication in the United Statescountry-region and is the location of the New York Stock Exchange, the largest stock exchange in the world by dollar volume. Sales tax is a tax that is placed on the purchases of goods or services. Sales tax is generally based on the country rate, with few exceptions. Together with the state rate of 4.00% and in some countries a transit rate of 0.375%, the total combined rate can range from 7.375% to 9.50%.

Sales tax and rates

New YorkState has 4% state sales tax. All countries and some cities add local taxes ranging from 3% to 5.5 %. The combined sales tax in Utica and New York, for example is 9.5%. In New York City, total sales taxes are 8.375%, which includes 0.375 charged for benefit of the metropolitan transport Authority (New York). As on January 4, 2006, New YorkState has again eliminated sales tax on all clothing and shoes up to $110.00 per item. Most countries and cities have not eliminated their local sales taxes on clothing and shoes. There are however, 11 countries and 5 cities, most notably New York City. New York State- 4.0%, Cattaraugus- 8.00%, Hamilton- 7.00%, Orleans- 8.00%, Niagara- 8.00%, Washington- 7.00%.

Tax types and description- Banking corporation tax- the sales taxes are imposed on banking corporation, including commercial and savings and loan associations, trust companies, and certain subsidiaries of banks that ; do business in New York.

Cigarette Sales Tax- this taxes must be applied on the possession of all cigarettes, whether bought to resell or for consumption.

Commercial Motor Vehicle - a tax imposed on non passenger motor vehicle principally used in New York.Principally is defined as 50 % or more of the vehicle mileage during the year is within the city. Regardless of whether the owners or the operators business is in the New York.

Commercial Rent Tax-(CRT) a sales tax is imposed on tenant of premises that are used to conduct business, profession, or commercial activities in Manhattan south of 96th street.

Hotel Room Occupancy- A sales tax are imposed on the occupancy of hotel., motel, bed and breakfast, boarding house and transient club/ apartment rooms, based on the cost of room rent and paid by guest.

Overview

Each state has the ability to impose own sales tax rate. There are also many states that regularly offer sales tax breaks for a period of time.
