My first brush with Italian was in the form of the directions in music, such as forte (loud), crescendo (getting louder) and allegro (fast). In 1988 I decided to have a go at learning the language and got myself a Linguaphone Italian course. Unfortunately I never got past the first few lessons due to laziness and lack of self discipline and motivation.
In 2002 I had taught myself some more Italian using the book Colloquial Italian in preparation for a trip to Sicily. I learnt enough to have basic conversations and to read the language a bit. This knowledge proved very handy in Sicily, where some of the people I met spoke little or no English.
I hope to learn more Italian one of these days and would like to explore other parts of Italy.
