Currently, there is a severe shortage of nurses in the United States and this has made relocation of nurses highly imperative. Nurses are relocated from an existing place to the hospital that has severe shortage in the nursing staff. This shortage and the practice of compensating it through relocation, eventually gave rise to a full-fledged travel nursing career. Travel nurses, typically, are nurses who just travel from one hospital to the other. They are not staff nurses.

Consider this. Travel nurses usually have a 4 to 52 week assignments throughout the United States. At the end of the contract, hospitals usually offer an extension of the contract or in some cases, permanent employment. On each assignment a travel nurse will be provided with a furnished apartment in a safe neighborhood close to the hospital. Travel nurses get higher pay than the staff nurses. This is because hospitals consider travelling (away from the family and home) to compensate their shortage as a sacrifice. Well, many do not consider it as a sacrifice but, nevertheless, the sentiment helps to earn more.

To be a travel nurses, one must have a minimum of one

year experience in a particular specialty. This experience could also be shown in terms of grades acquired while studying. Travel nursing companies only look for some merit and aptitude in the nurse before accepting their registrations. Once registered with the agency, the agency will help you with your licensure and documentation. Before registering with any agency, do a bit of research. Usually its the agency helps get a higher pay. Different companies bargain different rates with hospitals. So, registering with an agency that usually strives to get a higher pay for its nurses will help.

When choosing a travel nurse job, one needs to be careful. Every job has its own disadvantages. You need to see if youre happy with the hospital and the place you are being relocated to. Before choosing a travel nursing job, you need to understand the great deal of travelling involved and must be prepared for it. Also, the conditions of hospitals will vary from one to the other. If you think that you cant be that versatile and adapt to a place quickly, re-think your choice. Travel nurse jobs could drain you out and vex you as well.

Travel nursing is not everybodys cup of tea. Some dont like the adventure, excitement, travel and challenges associated with the job. It is a full-fledged career today. Opt for it, only if you have it in you to deal with it. Otherwise, a staff nurse is still an option.
