Nurses are relocated from an existing place to the hospital that has severe shortage in the nursing staff. This shortage and the practice of compensating it through relocation, eventually gave rise to a full-fledged travel nursing career. Travel nurses, typically, are nurses who just travel from one hospital to the other. They are not staff nurses.

Travel nurse job get you a higher pay than the staff nurses. This is because hospitals consider you travelling (away from your family and home) to compensate their shortage as a sacrifice. Well, you may not consider it as a sacrifice but, nevertheless, it helps you earn more. A travel nurse job comes with accommodation as well. Only problem, however, is that the non-salary benefits are fewer. Agencies mostly provide for health and dental insurance and a 401k plan. Relocation is also taken care of.

Travel nursing jobs are usually short-term

assignments given on a contractual basis. The contract could vary from four weeks to 13 weeks. Some hospitals might offer extensions when the contract period ends and sometimes, you might also get an offer for a permanent job.

Travel nursing agencies usually take in nurses with a minimum of one year experience only for travel nurse jobs. Once you are registered with the agency, the agency will help you with your licensure and documentation. You can apply for one personally at your States Board of Nursing as well. You would need a different license for a different State. However, if your home State is part of the NLCA or the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrators, then you can work in the member States without applying for a new license. Currently, 20 States are part of NLCA.

When choosing a travel nurse job, one needs to be careful. Every job has its own disadvantages. You need to see if youre happy with the hospital and the place you are being relocated to. Before choosing a travel nursing job, you need to understand the great deal of travelling involved and must be prepared for it. Also, the conditions of hospitals will vary from one to the other. If you think that you cant be that versatile and adapt to a place quickly, re-think your choice. Travel nurse jobs could drain you out and vex you as well.

There is a severe shortage of nurses in the country. The growth prospects are extremely high. Consequently, over 300 travel agencies have propped up across the country. There are more than 20,000 travel nurses today and the shortage is still not adequately dealt with.
