Georgetown, Delaware is a county situated in Sussex in the United States. Based on the estimates of the 2006 Census Bureau, the total population of the city is 4,911. Georgetown is a county seat of the Sussex County. Before Georgetown got the position as the Sussex County Seat, it was located on the region of Lewes on Delaware Bay. The Dutch colonists established the first colony in Delaware, in the year 1631 and till that time, it was the only significant settlement in Delaware.

Every couple of years, Georgetown hosts what is called as Return Day which is a festival and a half-day long parade for a couple of days subsequent to the Election Day. This event mainly stemmed from the colonial days, during which the people would assemble in Georgetown, Delaware a couple of days after the election, for hearing the results.

In addition, the political race winners of that particular race would parade in carriages around the circle with the chairs and, losers of the political parties of the country burying the hatchet ceremoniously in a sand tub. The Return day afternoon is holiday for most of the Sussex state and county workers. In addition, the event is distinguished by the conventional feast of oyster. Most people in Georgetown Delaware are of the feeling that the staid and conventionally political climate of the state is owed mostly to the tradition of Return Day.

Thanks to the status of Delaware as a border state at the time of the Civil War, just as all of the Sussex County, Georgetown had sent its men for fighting on the sides of both Confederate and the Union. About 25.1 % of the population and 20.9 % of the families were under the poverty line. This included 8.4 % of those above the age of 65 years and 34.8 % of the population below the age of 18.
