Located in Wayne County, Ohio, Wooster was first settled around 1800. Three names associated with the early development of the area are William Henry, Joseph Larwill and John Beaver. The town was officially established in 1808 and named after the celebrated American Revolution personality, David Wooster. The town developed rapidly and replaced Madison as the county seat in 1811. By 1850 the town had a sizeable number of residents, and it has now grown to around 25,000 to 30,000 people. This gives the highest population among all the towns in Wayne County.

The flourishing commercial activity was mainly centered on agricultural inputs, marketing and related services. Two banks and a newspaper were set up. Civil, social and cultural facilities were developed. Educational institutions were promoted and women were encouraged to join them. School and college level education developed during the next few decades and the town now experiences the full benefit of those early efforts. The town?s commercial activities developed throughout the 20th century. The rising prosperity of farmers in the surrounding areas added to the prosperity of the town. The Ohio Research and Development Center for Agriculture was set up here.

Following the national trend, real estate had been depressed during the last few months in Wayne County but there are definite signs of improvement. While value is higher the volume of sales has dipped. Yet most sellers are able to get their asking price.
