Boston Transportation
As many know that the city of Boston is famous for temperamental drivers who often break the traffic rules and the driving scruples taught in traffic schools. The traffic gridlocks of the city are simply puzzling. To make the scenario further worse, the parking lots are damn expensive and even if you manage to get a space to park your car, you may have to pay a lot. Boston does have a fantastic public transportation system. The Public transportation in the Boston, Massachusetts region is run by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) took over operations from the private Boston Elevated Railway, which ran the rapid transit, streetcars and buses in the Boston area. Later on the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) took over operations from the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA).
The subways, streetcars, buses and commuter rail in Boston is run by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). The MBTA is commonly referred to as the Transportation in Boston. If you happen to come across the streets of Boston you will find a common sign, a white circle with a block black in the middle. The encompasses four subway lines and, the lines are identified by their colour codes. They are the red, orange, blue and the silver lines and two trolley lines, the Green
line and a streetcar that runs from Ash Mont to Mattapan. Boston has the oldest subway in North America and also has the first underground streetcar traffic. The subway begins running between 5.00 and 5.30 each morning and continues till 1 a.m. The last inbound train may be around 12.15 a.m. During rush hours the boston Transportation is the best option; it is often faster than a cab even. The Transportation is the best way to get to the airport. The free shuttle buses operated by the Transportation can easily take you to any of the terminals.
Besides the subway system, the MBTA operates bus services. The bus schedules are easily available at subway stations. The MBTA has replaced many of its old buses and have intoduced new buses with flip-out wheelchair ramps at the front doorway. MBTA has also replaced many of the trolley buses. The Transportation also has paratransit program, which is called the Ride. These lift equipped vans are for people who cannot use the general public transportation, those who are physically handicapped , mentally disabled or people using wheel chairs.
The MBTA operates several park and ride facilities on its subway and commuter rail lines, close to major highways. These are filled up with commuters on weekday mornings, they provide a good place for visitors to leave their cars and see the city without parking hassles on evenings and weekends.
The commuter rail is another means of public transport for those who stay outside Boston. The commuter rail which is shown by purple line on some Boston transportation subway maps connects Boston with far away towns like Ipswich, Worcester, and Providence. Most of the stations have parking lots. Commuter rail schedules are easily available at stations and even online. The commuter rail service in Boston is extremely efficient and delays are very rare. The MBTA also operates park and ride facilities on its subway and commuter rail lines.
Apart from the major railway stations the North Station and the South Station, there is another station located in Back Bay. One more station is located outside the city of Boston on Route 128. All of these stations are served by the Commuter rail service. As there is no direct rail connection between North Station and South Station so, the passengers use the MBTA orange line from North Station to Back Bay.. All stations on the Red Line and Orange line are accessible and have high level platforms on the same level as train car doors. Stations on the Blue line are wheelchair accessible so the wheelchair users should always take the blue line train. The green line station runs the trolley cars.
Boston is served by three major airports Beverly Municipal Airport to the north, the Bedford/Hanscom Field to the west, and Norwood Memorial Airport to the south. Most of the scheduled passenger service is handled by the Logan International Airport situated in the East Boston neighbourhood. There are also smaller airports that are situated further from the city.
Last but not the least it can be said that The city of Boston is also known as America's Walking City and has the highest percentage of on foot commuters. Boston is a compact city and is rightly sized for bicycling and walking. There are standing Committees which take special care to improve the pedestrian environment. The streets of Boston gradually evolved from old cowpaths so it seems that the roads of Boston were not planned. It becomes very difficult for the non resident drivers to drive in Boston because the city has no street grid.
