Boston Popular Event Some incidents change the history. The Boston massacre is one such incident. The occurrence of this incident lead to a series of incidents, which culminated with the declaration of independence by the American colonies. The Boston popular events below gives a brief description on the unfolding of this incident never like to get subjugated. The basic cause for Boston popular events Boston massacre incident was forcible subjugation of the locals by the British troops. In order to restore order and respect for the British law, the British governor in Massachusetts had called for two regiments of soldiers in 1768. The residents however, had developed resentment for the troops.

On March 5, 1770, a soldier, Captain John Goldfinch was walking on the street. A black apprentice, Edward Garrick, of a barber complained that the soldier has not paid his master?s fees. The soldier had in reality settled the fees but he cared not to justify himself. When the apprentice persisted, a sentry called White, standing nearby tried to defend Captain Goldfinch. For which Garrick responded that there were no gentlemen left in the regiment. Such a response from a commoner was not acceptable in those days. White left his post and started confronting Garrick. Soon a small crowd of commoners gathered around and started teasing the guard. Some even went to the extent of hurling snow at the guard. Being a loner among the crowd, White ran towards Custom House, loaded his gun and started waving it towards the crowd. He then, through a messenger, requested the person in charge at the Main Guard for help.

At this same time two skirmishes occurred between the civilians and the redcoats, one a few blocks away from this incident and the other at the dockyard. The one occurring at the dockyard was a real confrontation with two hundred strong crowd on one side and a few redcoats on the other side. Suddenly both the parties decided to move towards Custom House. All of them started streaming towards Customs House gathering more discontented residents on the way.

One Captain Thomas Preston was in charge of the Main Guard, on this fateful day. He came along with six privates to the Customs House. The streaming in of more residents had made White, the victim, more prone for attack. The officer was really worried. He had to choose between taking action against the crowd or allow the mob to act on its own. If he has to react, he has to seek permission from the magistrate, according to the law of the Province. Moreover, he was also aware that the soldiers were less in number and the irate mob could do anything. He therefore, tried to shoo away the mob towards the Main Guard. The soldiers therefore began moving briskly in between the crowd and tried to disperse them.

At this time, Crispus Attucks, a forty seven year old Mulato, grabbed one of the soldier (Hugh Montgomery) and attacked him with a large club. Montgomery immediately shouting ?Fire? unloaded his musket in the direction of the crowd. The other soldiers except for one followed suit. The shooting according to different estimates went on for six seconds to two minutes. A bullet fired randomly by Mathew Killroy, hit Samuel Gray in the head creating a hole there. Two bullets from unknown guns hit Crispus Attucks in the chest. Such an act infuriated the mob further. They started moving with greater vigour towards the soldiers. By this time, five civilians from among the mob lay dead and six others were badly injured. It was then that Captain Preston ordered the soldiers to stop firing.

Arrests and imprisonments

The news about the shooting reached the ears of the Acting Governor, Thomas Hutchinson. He immediately marched towards the scene. When he approached there he noticed an angry mob and a bewildered Captain Preston. The Acting Governor confronted the Captain and asked him for explanation.

After which he moved towards the upper floors of the Town House, where several council members had already gathered assured them that peace will be brought to the town. He then moved out into the balcony and requested the crowd to calm down and promised them justice. The crowd then started breaking.

Justices Richard Dania and John Tudor issued warrant orders for arresting the captain in the night. The captain was arrested and brought to the Town House, tried for three hours and was sentenced for imprisonment.

Later the next morning, John Adams was requested to defend the Captain and seven other soldiers. A week later, the grand jury at the request of Attorney General Jonathan Sewall produced the indictments against the accused. The captain however, kept denying that he had ever ordered the soldiers to ?Fire? and the soldiers maintained that they bid their captain?s orders and fired at the mob.

The authorities therefore decided to try the soldiers and the captain separately. The captain was tried in Queen Street Courthouse between October 24 to 30 on charges of murder. Based on the evidence presented by three defense witnesses, the twelve member jury acquitted Captain Preston on all charges.

Eight weeks later, the remaining seven soldiers were tried. The defense side produced forty witnesses including a dying statement by Patrick Carr. Boston popular events - The jury after three hours of deliberations acquitted all the other soldiers except for Hugh Montgomery and Mathew Killroy.

On December 14, Montgomery and Killroy pleaded the court based on the benefit of the clergy, to anal the sentence from imprisonment to branding of their thumbs. The court accepted and sheriff Stephen Greenleaf branded their right thumbs before everybody. The Bostonians were not happy with this outcome. They expressed their resentments through various ways.

Later through the ages, the law community may discuss on the outcome of the verdict given on that particular day. But at that particular instance, it would have been incorrect for the country to punish the soldiers for defending themselves against a mob.
